Angel - 2009 - Skip's Story by Mary
Skip came into rescue
in 2009 - 16 years old.
Had been owned since he was 8 weeks old until his family had a baby and it
was his time to go.
He is remarkable and has the blood work and
physical attributes of a dog much his junior. He has been a pleasant
addition into a foster home with multiple elderly dogs and has
transitioned beautifully - has gained over a pound and is enjoying running
around the back yard as he should.
He's starting to enjoy life as he
should. Though he's lost a good part of his hearing he can still see really
well and is such a cool guy.
Thanks to Rescue he now has a chance
for a couple more years of love and attention and care.
The
official Rescue
"Skip" t-shirt
are now available on the IG Rescue Items web site! "Skip-the dog, the myth, the legend".
The 2010 Story Update Continues:
Mary Frankio is
the Director of IGCA Rescue. It is Mary's responsibility to oversee and
co-ordinate the IGCA Rescue response to the over 800 dogs who enter our
program every year. I have known Mary for many years. Mary cares for those
neglected, abused, unwanted and helpless canine souls who have literally no
one else. Her own dogs are mostly those that no one else wants. Last year a
16 year old IG named Skippy was literally "dumped" into Rescue after he
became "expendable". At long last the humans who had originally purchased
him as a puppy finally were granted the joy of a surprise pregnancy and an
expected human baby....so the dog was no longer "necessary". At age 16
Skippy was not easily adoptable so Mary adopted him. He is the light of her
eyes and the joy of her heart. Here is an edited letter that Mary wrote to
honor Skippy on the occasion of his 17th birthday which is TODAY. (I had to
edit this letter. Mary sometimes uses "colorful" language about people who
dump dogs):
Hey Judy,
While I had a minute I wanted to drop
you a quick line. Skippy turns 17 TODAY. Wow, what a milestone for this
little trooper!!! As you might recall, I got a series of e-mails from his
owners last year before they handed him over to us. The owners' comments
about him were the most vile I'd ever heard regarding any dog. And being
that Skip was almost 16 at that time, it hit me even harder. In one of the
emails the owner said that he woke up every morning hoping that Skip had
died during the night because he had turned into such a "nuisance". That
couple had owned Skippy since he was 10 weeks old!!! The owner claimed that
the dog had dementia, peed where he slept, barked at nothing at all hours of
the night or day and wouldn't pee outside or on a pee pad. The owner also
made it clear that if we didn't take Skippy....immediate euthanization was
next on the day's list of "casual errands". Congratulate me on my self
control. You know what I would have liked to call this guy!!!
From
the moment that Skippy was placed in my arms...I knew that I had been given
an incredible gift. Skip has been with us over a year now and has totally
blessed our home with his presence. He is a cool, grand, feisty, naughty and
sweet little man who has added a level of life to our pack that I've never
seen before. It's like every day the young dogs groom him to get his
approval, allow him to get the first and best treats and don't run him over
when they are charging around. They sense that he has somewhat diminished
eyesight and make sure he is never in harm's way. Does he pee in his sleep?
NEVER!!! He always goes smack dab in the middle of the pad or outside. Does
he have dementia? He can remember where he put the chew bone where he hid it
days before and he makes sure that no one else snags it. And you heard
right, "CHEW BONE"!!!........ He has almost all his teeth. He's even had a
dental! My vet told me Skip was the oldest little dog she'd ever done a
dental on. That's our Skip! Does he bark at nothing? I've never heard him
bark without a reason. In fact...Skippy is much more selective than most of
the others!!
Skip is having the best time in our retirement home.
Gramma thinks he's tops!!!!!! She's made him so many coats that he is hardly
ever seen in the same one twice. He still enjoys walking up and down the
street here and greeting all the neighbors as we pass. He loves going to
Dunkin Donuts 'cause the girls always give him a little pinch of a muffin.
Blueberry's his favorite and now at 17, how can I say no? <G>
I
thought maybe that people who you know and our friends on ITALGREY might
want to help Skippy celebrate going into his 17th year. In honor of him, I
have designed a teeshirt. It says "SKIPPY, THE DOG, THE MYTH, THE
LEGEND".... and has his picture integrated into the writing. For $10.00
folks could order their own Skippy shirt and give Skip a great birthday
present too. He loves to help rescue. The $10.00 includes shipping and Skip
will ***pawtagraph the shirt for no charge to show his fans how much he
cares for the people who always help him. All sizes are available. Any
profit from the sale of these tee shirts will benefit the dogs of Italian
Greyhound Rescue (IGRF).
